Former Pres. Bush named U.N. Asia quake envoy
UNITED NATIONS – Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush will represent the United Nations as special envoy in the international response to the South Asian earthquake disaster.
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced the appointment at U.N. World Headquarters in New York Thursday.
“I am delighted that President Bush has accepted to play this role. I know the Pakistan authorities are too,” he said in a statement. “We know that he is going to bring extraordinary leadership and attention to this terrible tragedy.”
At a briefing for reporters, Bush said he was “very proud,” to represent the United Nations and Annan. “I’m pleased to work for him for this noble cause,” he said. “Barbara (his wife) and I have been heartbroken over the tragedy in Pakistan.”
Bush emphasized his role was not to interrupt the relief and reconstruction work already in progress in the earthquake-shattered region and said his job was instead to focus fundraising efforts.
