China Netcom completes 402 mln usd sale of Asia Netcom

China Netcom Group (CNCG) and its Hong Kong-listed unit said they have completed the sale of 100 pct of Asia Netcom to an investor group for 402 mln usd.

The investor group - led by Ashmore Investment Management Ltd, Spinnaker Capital Ltd and Clearwater Capital Partners - will pay 169 mln usd for the international service unit of Asia Netcom and 233 mln usd for the companys pan-Asian submarine cable network, China Netcom said in a statement.

Going forward, CNCG has every intention to maintain a strategic business relationship with Asia Netcom, leveraging off the synergies we have built over the past three years. For CNCG, this deal is simply a move towards the restructuring of our international strategy in order to further enhance the value of our state-owned assets, said CNCGs president Zuo Xunsheng, president of CNCG.

The sum includes the disposal of its equity interests in Rex Metal Packaging in Malaysia and Qingdao Rex Packaging. Hong Leong Asia expects a gain of S$5.5 million from the divestment. It says the sale represents an opportunity to exit from the business and focus its resources on other opportunities which have better growth prospects. China opens Asia's longest land tunnel railway China has commissioned the Wushaoling tunnel railway, the longest of its kind in Asia and a key facility in the Asia-Europe Land Bridge project in Gansu Province in north-western China.
