Asia’s richest woman cleared of forging will
Asia’s richest woman, Nina Wang, was yesterday cleared of forging her late husband’s will after an eight-year legal battle against her father-in-law.
Wang, 68 - who has a personal fortune estimated at $2.4bn by Forbes magazine - was earlier this year charged with forging her late husband Teddy’s will.
However, after her September victory in a civil case against her elderly father-in-law, prosecutors announced Friday that three fraud charges against her had been dropped.
Nina’s husband Teddy Wang was kidnapped in 1990 and was nine years later declared dead after no trace of him was ever found. After his disappearance, his wife inherited his fortune.
She built his company, Chinachem, into a a $3.09bn business empire but initially lost a probate battle with her 92-year-old father-in-law who claimed she forged Teddy’s will.
Appeal court judges ruled she had probably forged the will of her late husband and, after the ruling, police investigated the issue and Nina Wang was charged with forgery.
