HPC Clusters Open New Markets for Microsoft in Asia

Growing demand for inexpensive, high-performance server clusters is creating new opportunities for Microsoft in Asia, a company official said.

A lot of the growth has been on the less-than-US$250,000 computer clusters, said Chris Sharp, Microsofts Asia-Pacific general manager of server and tools products, discussing the market for high-performance computing (HPC). We think thats the sweet spot for the things we can do.

Growing demand for high-performance computing was spurred by Linux, which helped make high-performance computing capabilities more affordable, said Lawrence Liew, the chief technology officer of cluster specialists Scalable Systems in Singapore.

However, Linux users are not the only ones who want high-performance computing capabilities; many users running applications on Windows servers want them too, Liew said.

Microsoft to Show Off Vista at Asia Hacker Conference

Microsoft to Show Off Vista at Asia Hacker Conference Microsoft plans to give a hacker conference in Asia an inside look at new security features on Windows Vista later this year, the organizer of the event said Tuesday. The companys commitment to show off Vista to the hacker and security community is part of a long-term trend aimed at gaining greater feedback from users prior to product debuts. More and more software and hardware vendors are trying to weed out vulnerabilities before products go to market, and they often turn to the underground and above-ground security community for advice. Companies know that fixing

Pearce Survives Wobbles At Asia Open

Pearce Survives Wobbles At Asia Open New Zealands Mahal Pearce has won a share of fifth place on the European Golf Tour in the Asian Open in Shanghai, but it could have been so much better. Pearce fired a final round 71 ending up five-under for the tournament, and tied for fifth, two shots off winner, Spains Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano. However, the New Zealander had the lead midway through the back nine, before shooting bogeys on the 13th and 14th. Pearce ended up in some good company, and was competing for the lead with the likes of Colin Montgomerie and Henrik Stenson,

Asia Roundup: Markets rally after Fed hints at pause

Asia Roundup: Markets rally after Fed hints at pause HONG KONG: Asian stock markets shot higher yesterday on Wall Streets lead after the Federal Reserve (Fed) hinted at a pause in US interest rate rises, soothing fears over slowing global growth, dealers said. Dealers said that while the Fed left open the possibility of further rate increases it appeared to tone down the risk of inflation while indicating that the US economy also appears to be cooling. The markets were now taking the view there may be one more rate rise either in August or September to 5.5 per cent and then

Mixed 2006 start in Asia

Mixed 2006 start in Asia Korean stocks gain 0.7%, but Taiwan index is 1.3% lower in year's 1st session; Japan markets closed. If the first day of trade in 2006 is a harbinger in Asia, expect a year of growing political tension, worsening inflation and volatile markets that continue on an upward march - but perhaps not the rocket- like path seen in the latter half of 2005. In the first day of trading in the new year, shares in Korea and Taiwan, the only two major regional markets open Monday, moved in opposite directions in an otherwise thinly-traded session. Japanese markets were closed

Randhawa ready for Volvo Masters of Asia

Randhawa ready for Volvo Masters of Asia Jyoti Randhawa defends his US $600,000 Volvo Masters of Asia title this week at Thai Country Club in a far better prepared manner than his last Volvo event. Two weeks ago the Indian played the first two rounds of the Volvo China Open using borrowed clubs and wearing trainers as his luggage arrived late following a long trip from the World Cup in Portugal. He handled the situation extremely well by opening with rounds of 71 and 67 to be in the hunt, and on the eve of this week's Volvo event quipped: "This time my
