Cycling/Asia Cup: Hafizs day of triumph and despair on the track

HAFIZ Sufian went through a mix of emotions as he stormed his way to the 1km time trial gold medal before crashing twice to knock himself out of contention for the 200m sprint in the Asia Cup at Velodrome Rakyat in Ipoh yesterday.

With a time of one minute 06.551 seconds in the 1km time trial, the fastest ever by a Malaysian on an outdoor track, Hafiz, who celebrates his 20th birthday on Wednesday, showed that he has arrived at the form which will make him a medal contender in the Asian Games in December.

The time was just 0.4 seconds off his national record of 1:06.011s set in the Commonwealth Games in March, that being on an indoor track at the Dunc Gray Velodrome in Melbourne. With five months to go before the Asian Games, the Selangor rider is confident of knocking off a further two seconds.

On current form, if this was an indoor track, Id say the time would be around the lower 1:05.0s region, but I want to stay focused. By the time I reach Doha, Im confident I can be clocking around 1:04.0s or lower, which would give me a fighting chance for a medal, said Hafiz.

At the East Asia Summit held in Kuala Lumpur this week, host Malaysia tried to finesse a rapprochement between East Asian

Fake Tamiflu from Asia seized by US customs agents SAN FRANCISCO (AFX) - Authorities have intercepted more than 50 packages of fake bird flu vaccine shipped to the US in recent weeks, evidently from China, federal officials said. Scientists are analyzing the ingredients in capsules sold as 'generic Tamiflu' to online customers, Dave Elder, director of the Food and Drug Administration's office of enforcement, told Agence France-Presse. 'First of all, there is no such thing as generic Tamiflu,' Elder said, noting that Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche is the only legitimate maker of the vaccine. Preliminary testing confirmed the capsules did not

Indian team gets ready for Asia Cup qualifier The Indian football team was slugging it out in a practice match against the Air Force team, but its skipper, Baichung Bhutia was sweating it out by jogging on the adjacent athletic track. "Straight running is not a problem,'' says Bhutia to the doctor P. S. M. Chandran who queries about his recovery. Bhutia suffered a cut on his thigh during East Bengal's national league encounter against JCT recently and thus has been reduced to the sidelines so far during the national team's preparation for the Asia Cup qualifier to be played
