LMEs extended trading hours may boost metal trade in Asia

Metal trading in Asia will get a boost with London Metal Exchange extending the trading hours on its electronic trading platform, LME Select, by six hours from June 1. This will improve price transparency and increased arbitrage opportunities, industry officials said.

LME Select now opens six hours early, from 0530 IST to 2330. This move, analysts said, will improve liquidity on Asian exchanges as traders will be able to trade simultaneously on LME, on real time basis.

An official from Indias base metals conglomerate said, Asian traders can track LME on real time basis and can hedge their positions more effectively. Earlier, Asian markets took price signals from LMEs previous days close.

Base metal companies in China, which account for 22% of global copper consumption, had no real time platform to hedge against the price risk.

COMMODITIES-Base metals, gold extend losses in Asia

COMMODITIES-Base metals, gold extend losses in Asia Global base metal and gold markets extended their losses on Thursday as big investment funds continued to shy away from the once roaring bull markets as concern mounts about rising interest rates and metal supplies. Analysts said interest rates hikes in the United States and other countries could choke growth and any drop off in metal demand would cap chances of an early recovery in prices. "We have possibly seen the all-time high and it might take some time to get back to the same levels again," said David Thurtell, an analyst with the

It says the sale represents an opportunity to exit from the business and focus its resources on other opportunities which have better growth prospects. It plans to use the proceeds to fund the expansion plans of its green-pallet business in GPac Technology. More: channelnewsasia.com

Asia surges on profits

Asia surges on profits Asian stocks surged on Thursday as leading technology companies such as Advantest Corp. posted sturdy quarterly profits, while the dollar extended losses on signs that the U.S. economy was cooling down. The yen slumped to a record low against the euro on the view that yen interest rates will stay unattractive to investors when compared with dollar or euro rates for many more months. The dollars overnight decline lifted gold prices by about $6 an ounce to $628, as the dollar-denominated metal became cheaper for Asian and European buyers. More : edition.cnn.com

Mixed 2006 start in Asia

Mixed 2006 start in Asia Korean stocks gain 0.7%, but Taiwan index is 1.3% lower in year's 1st session; Japan markets closed. If the first day of trade in 2006 is a harbinger in Asia, expect a year of growing political tension, worsening inflation and volatile markets that continue on an upward march - but perhaps not the rocket- like path seen in the latter half of 2005. In the first day of trading in the new year, shares in Korea and Taiwan, the only two major regional markets open Monday, moved in opposite directions in an otherwise thinly-traded session. Japanese markets were closed
