Turkey signs to join planned Asia-Pacific space group

Turkey signed on a charter for a planned international space club on Thursday in Beijing, making it the ninth member of the organization with headquarters.

Oktay Ozuye, Turkish ambassador to China, signed the Convention on the proposed Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO), which is designed to promote the peaceful use of space and space applications in the Asia-Pacific region.

Among those witnessing the ceremony were diplomats from Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Iran, Mongolia, Pakistan, Peru and Thailand, the eight countries that signed the document last October in Beijing.

Sun Laiyan, director of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), said China welcomes the move by Turkey to sign on the convention, and China will support, as always, the establishment and operation of the organization.

Oceania could join Asia playoffs - Blatter

Oceania could join Asia playoffs - Blatter President of world governing body Fifa, Sepp Blatter, yesterday said future champions of Oceania could join the final round of Asian qualifiers for future World Cups. Oceania's current "half" place could shrink if the regional winners had to join a group of Asian teams instead of being involved in a two-leg playoff against a fifth-ranked South American team for direct World Cup qualification. "I think the solution will be to have the winner of the Oceania elimination join the Asian group," Blatter told reporters in Tokyo. "I don't know if we will say it's

First human bird flu deaths outside East Asia

First human bird flu deaths outside East Asia Two Turkish teenagers have died of bird flu, probably H5N1, according to the World Health Organization and the Turkish government. They are the first fatalities from avian influenza outside East Asia. There are also about a dozen more cases in the region, some serious. But there is so far no indication that the virus has begun spreading readily between humans, which it must do to become pandemic. Like most of the other 142 reported human cases so far, the Turkish victims appear to have been infected directly by sick chickens. In October, Turkey became the

TPG to beef up its interest in Asia

TPG to beef up its interest in Asia Texas Pacific Group, one of the world's biggest private equity groups, plans a push into Asia amid signs that Newbridge Capital, its Asian affiliate, is too small to compete with global rivals for increasingly large deals. People close to the situation said TPG wanted to deploy significantly more capital in Asia by using its new $10bn-$12bn buy-out fund to work on deals alongside Newbridge, a joint venture with Blum Capital Partners. The move would represent a shift from TPG's current strategy, which left most Asian investments to Newbridge – a 12-year-old venture that is one
