Global industry pageant CONEXPO Asia 2006 opens in Beijing
Global leading industry pageant, CONEXPO Asia 2006, organized by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), opened in Beijing on Monday, introducing global leading construction industry suppliers to the fast-growingChinese market.
This is the first time that CONEXPO has moved into Asia. Officials with the AEM said that CONEXPO Asia will showcase manufacturers of latest equipment, products and services related to the construction industry in Asia.
More than 190 domestic and overseas construction industry suppliers appeared at the exposition, with over 80 companies from the United States.
The exposition is an important event to balance Sino-US bilateral trade, said Zhang Yujing, Executive Vice President of the China Chamber of Commerce of Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME).

China opens Asia's longest land tunnel railway
China has commissioned the Wushaoling tunnel railway, the longest of its kind in Asia and a key facility in the Asia-Europe Land Bridge project in Gansu Province in north-western China.
The 21.05-kilometre-long tunnel railway, which is more than 2,400 meters above sea level, is a key project for the Asia-Europe Land Bridge's 3,651-km-long section from Lianyungang in East China to Urumqi in Northwest China.
Designed to allow speeds of 160 km per hour, the tunnel railway has shortened the distance between Dacaigou and Longgou, part of the long section, by 30.4 km.

The largest ever gathering of eye specialists from the Asia-Pacific region is taking place in Singapore over the next four days.
The 21st Congress of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology has attracted nearly 4,000 delegates from more than 25 countries in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
The meeting was officially opened by Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan at Suntec City.
Singapore last hosted the congress in 1968.

LMEs extended trading hours may boost metal trade in Asia
Metal trading in Asia will get a boost with London Metal Exchange extending the trading hours on its electronic trading platform, LME Select, by six hours from June 1. This will improve price transparency and increased arbitrage opportunities, industry officials said.
LME Select now opens six hours early, from 0530 IST to 2330. This move, analysts said, will improve liquidity on Asian exchanges as traders will be able to trade simultaneously on LME, on real time basis.

Asia's second budget airline terminal opened Sunday at Changi Airport with only one airline using it, but authorities expressed optimism that more would follow.
Tiger Airways, backed by Singapore Airlines and the government's investment arm Temasek Holdings, is the only one to make the switch so far out of at least 18 regional no-frills airlines.
It marked the opening with 16 flights, eight in-bound and eight out-bound. Besides Singapore, the destinations included Bangkok, Phuket, Hanoi, Hat Yai, Ho Chi Minh City, Krabi, Macau and Manila.
