Japan FM Vows to Fight East Asia Nationalism

Wrapping up his visit to the United States, Japans Foreign Minister Taro Aso has commented on Tokyos fraying relations with Seoul and Beijing, saying he believes the three countries will withstand the current conflict through growing cultural and economic exchanges in the region.

The rising tide of nationalism in East Asia will be difficult to turn back but must be channeled in a positive way, Aso said. There is a fine line between patriotism, a healthy love for ones country and narrow-minded nationalism that breeds hatred towards others. He did not name any particular countries, but his comments come at a time when Tokyos ties with both Beijing and Seoul are at their worst in decades.

Japanese history textbooks, which Korea and China accuse of whitewashing Japans wartime atrocities, territorial clashes as well as visits to a militarist shrine by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi are the main bones of contention. Asked about the dispute over the prime ministers visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, Aso said resolving that issue will not solve all the problems between the three countries.

At the Beijing conference, the international community pledged 1.9 billion U.S. dollars for the fight against avian

We will help Southeast Asia fight terror: Rice

We will help Southeast Asia fight terror: Rice The U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, today vowed to help fight terrorism in Southeast Asia, warning that Islamic militants would turn the region into "a ring of fire" if not actively confronted. Rice -- wrapping up a two-day trip to Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation -- said al-Qaida-linked terror groups blamed for a series of bloody attacks in recent years were trying to destroy the multiethnic region's tradition of tolerance. "We are working alongside countries like Malaysia and Singapore and to build the capacity of others like the Philippines,

Bhutia suffered a cut on his thigh during East Bengal's national league encounter against JCT recently and thus has been reduced to the sidelines so far during the national team's preparation for the Asia Cup qualifier to be played

EU states fight Brussels over ‘shoe-dumping’ tariffs Three European Union member states are joining forces to try to prevent Brussels from slapping anti-dumping tariffs on some Asian shoe exports – mainly from China – and avoid a rerun of the recent textiles dispute with Beijing. The Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark are preparing a joint initiative, which they hope other members of the 25-nation EU will join, demanding an end to the anti-dumping procedure, according to Thomas Östros, the Swedish trade minister. The European Commission has been investigating Asian shoe exports and is considering punitive measures against Chinese leather and reinforced shoe
