Asia-Pacific prepares pandemic test

Australia and Singapore will lead an international exercise in June to test communications preparedness for a possible bird flu pandemic, officials said on Thursday.

The exercise, the first of its kind and involving major economies of the Asia-Pacific region, would test how countries would stay connected in a pandemic or other major disaster such as tsunamis and earthquakes.

It will give them an opportunity to respond to a credible real-life scenario that allows them to test communications across the region, Australian official Helena Studdert said on the sidelines of a Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) bird flu conference in Vietnams central city of Danang.

The June 7 and 8 round-the-clock exercise to accommodate different time zones would also test reaction to possible human-to-human spread of the deadly H5N1 strain of avian flu and international arrangements for emergencies, according to a document presented on the first day of the three-day meeting.

First bird flu deaths outside Asia

First bird flu deaths outside Asia A teenage brother and sister who died of bird flu were infected with the H5N1 strain of the virus, said the UN's health agency. It confirmed the first human fatalities from the deadly strain outside east Asia. A laboratory in Britain had detected H5N1 in samples from the 14-year-old boy and his 15-year-old sister, said World Health Organisation spokeswoman Maria Cheng. Tests have yet to be completed on samples from their 11-year-old sister, who died of suspected bird flu on Friday. Their doctor said they probably contracted the illness by playing with dead chickens. Cheng said the spread of
