Asias rising security risk

Asias rising security risk

Chinas growth and Japans military revival are increasing the chances of regional conflict, writes Eric Talmadge .

It has been a rough few days. Steaming up the eastern coast of Japan, Commander Joseph Deleons guided missile frigate has been tossed around on heavy seas and the younger sailors, back from five months ashore, are feeling seasick. Grounded by high winds, helicopter pilots watch movies in the ward room.

The primary mission is hunting submarines. But the Gary, like the US Seventh Fleet to which it belongs, is also a showcase of American power in a region fraught with crises - North Korea, Taiwan, terrorism and piracy.

It is also a region whose security profile is being changed by Chinas rise and a major realignment of US forces, and by the prospect of Japan breaking out of its 60-year pacifist mind-set and playing a greater defense role.

Gay men in Asia at high risk for HIV, largely ignored

Gay men in Asia at high risk for HIV, largely ignored Men who have sex with men in Asia are highly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, but remain largely ignored despite increasing infections in the region with the worlds second-highest number of people living with the virus, according to a report released Friday. Many Asian countries have been forced to address HIV/AIDS in high-risk groups such as female sex workers and injecting drug users, but men who have sex with men, known as MSM, have typically been left out - many men are married and do not identify themselves as gay or bisexual. This,

Informing and Equipping South Asias Leaders

Informing and Equipping South Asias Leaders Asia is among the most disaster-prone areas in the world. High human vulnerability in combination with increased geographical exposure to hazards have combined to create an environment with some of the highest losses both in terms of lives and the value of assets. In 2005, South Asia suffered a single earthquake which cost over 74,000 lives. As indicated by the cover of this issue, making decisions that reduce human vulnerability is a complex process. Affected nations have seen the cost and have much to gain. The nations of South Asia also have immense natural and

Rice in Asia, Addresses Major International Security Issues

Rice in Asia, Addresses Major International Security Issues U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has assured Asias top diplomats that the United States will continue working for a lasting resolution to the Middle East crisis. But the possibility of action on another pressing security issue, North Koreas nuclear weapons, seems to be fading. The U.S. secretary of state says she is willing to return to the Middle East if her presence will help end the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah militants. I am willing and ready to go back to the Middle East at any time if I think we can move

Macau rising as Asia’s casino capital

Macau rising as Asia's casino capital Once a backwater for hardcore gamblers, the former Portuguese colony of Macau is rising fast as Asia's entertainment and casino capital. Some now call Macau the ''Las Vegas of the East,'' and Macau's gaming revenues are on par with those of the Las Vegas Strip. Macau, however, is growing even faster than Las Vegas. It's on the threshold of a gaming boom, with more than a dozen casinos and resorts on the drawing boards or under construction, the result of a 2001 decision to open its doors to foreign casino operators. Two years later, mainland authorities agreed

Sweden denounces UN Security Council inaction on West Asia

Sweden denounces UN Security Council inaction on West Asia Swedish Foreign Minister Jan Eliasson on Friday criticized the UN Security Council for failing to adopt a resolution on the West Asian conflict. It undermines the authority of the UN Security Council, Eliasson told reporters. The parties could also wrongly assume that the world does not care about this conflict. They (the parties) have not listened very actively but if they get the signal from all the members of the security council, including the permanent members, that would be a signal that the escalation has to stop, he added. Meanwhile, a convoy of Nordic and
