DOST heads Asia-wide techno-entrepreneurship program
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) recently assumed the chairmanship of the Science and Technology Policy Asian Network (STEPAN), a 20-country group of science and technology policy makers aiming at assisting countries to utilize scarce S&T resources for development goals.
DOST Undersecretary Fortunato De la Peña met last week with several members of the STEPAN in Manila to discuss the implementation of the innovation-based entrepreneurship that encourages small-to-medium scale businesses to utilize new technologies for their livelihood.
De la Peña said the group is finalizing the criteria for choosing projects that could be funded. By mid next year, the group is expected to choose ten entrepreneurial projects.

TAKING what they said was a first step toward political and economic integration in Asia, parliamentary leaders from Europe and Asia yesterday signed a declaration establishing a regional Asia-Pacific unit of the Centrist Democratic International and elected Speaker Jose de Venecia its first president.

Japan will propose to 15 Asian neighbors launching talks in 2008 aimed at a region-wide free trade agreement as a precursor to establishing an East Asian economic community, trade minister Toshihiro Nikai said Tuesday.
Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Nikai told a press conference Japan will ask the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and China, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand to consider the regional FTA talks.

Asia-wide anti-piracy ops net 6.7 m discs, 915 arrests
About 6.7 million pirated CDs and DVDs have been seized and 915 arrests made in the past 30 days in an Asia-wide anti-piracy campaign by US based Motion Picture Association (MPA). In India, 163 raids were made against China (405 raids), Hong Kong (119), Malaysia (455), Indonesia(305) and Thailand (573 raids).
The raids resulted in record seizures of 6,750,350 pirated optical discs and 1,483 optical disc burners, as well as the 915 arrests.
