HK faces most serious overwork in Asia

An authoritative report points out that most industries in Hong Kong have higher demand for professionals to cope with the sharp increase of workload. The resulting situation of overwork in Hong Kong is the most serious in Asia.

A Hudson Global Resources survey of approximately 6,000 human resource executives in Asia shows that the present situation of overwork in Hong Kong is worse than the previous year. 43% of those executives pointed out that the situation is deteriorating, while the figure was 34% last year. The proportion of Hong Kong employees who face overwork ranks first among the four surveyed regions including Japan, Shanghai and Singapore.

In terms of different industries, legal professionals witness the sharpest deterioration, as 45% of interviewees said they felt more serious overwork. The figure was only 20% twelve months ago. The aggravation is correlated to increase of workload as well as shortage of professionals capable of handling initial public offering and merger and acquisition.

As for the causes of overwork, more than 80% of the surveyed regard sudden increase of workload as the primary one, followed by difficulties in recruiting qualified persons.

Zurich Financial CEO sees growth potential in Asia but faces environmental risks

Zurich Financial CEO sees growth potential in Asia but faces environmental risks Zurich Financial Group CEO James Schiro said there is substantial growth potential in Asia in life, motor and property insurances, with only 1 pct of natural disasters insured. This compares to a rate of around 40 pct in developed countries, he said. On the downside, growing environmental damage -- caused by the region's enormous growth -- is causing more natural disasters, he cautioned in an interview with Swiss SonntagsZeitung. Zurich's growth rate in past years has been smaller than previously as the group closed down a number of

Asia faces jobs crisis that could hit growth

Asia faces jobs crisis that could hit growth Asia is heading towards an employment crisis that could lead to social breakdown and a rapid collapse in growth rates, the Asian Development Bank has warned. The outlines of an Asian employment crisis are already taking shape, Ifzal Ali, the ADBs chief economist, said in New Delhi. Strong economic growth alone will not solve the [regions] problem. The slow pace of job creation even in countries with relatively high growth rates has left 500m unemployed or underemployed in a region with a total labour force of 1.7bn. Another 245m are set to join the

Najib: East Asia must prevent "power rivalries” from escalating

Najib: East Asia must prevent "power rivalries" from escalating Malaysia urged Asian nations such as China and Japan to prevent their rivalries from brewing into conflicts that could hurt regional stability. East Asia faces "a number of potential rivalries'' that could fuel tensions, similar to how power struggles in Europe in the early 20th century led to the First World War, said Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak on Thursday. "What is important is to look at the way to manage power rivalries so that they do not translate into hostility,'' Najib told a forum of government officials and analysts discussing

Indian team gets ready for Asia Cup qualifier The Indian football team was slugging it out in a practice match against the Air Force team, but its skipper, Baichung Bhutia was sweating it out by jogging on the adjacent athletic track. "Straight running is not a problem,'' says Bhutia to the doctor P. S. M. Chandran who queries about his recovery. Bhutia suffered a cut on his thigh during East Bengal's national league encounter against JCT recently and thus has been reduced to the sidelines so far during the national team's preparation for the Asia Cup qualifier to be played

Asia can eradicate poverty soon

Asia can eradicate poverty soon The Department for International Development (DFID), in collaboration with the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, have announced details of a conference to be held on 6-7 March in London to focus attention on building new forms of partnership to eradicate poverty in Asia. Asia has raised more people out of poverty than any other region at any time in history. Growth has been strong and though currently two out of three of the world's poorest people live in Asia, by 2015 this could fill to one in three if current trends continue. With continued efforts, it
