BlueScope set to triple Asia capacity
Australia’s BlueScope Steel is on target to triple its capacity in Asia by 2008 with major investments in China, India, Thailand and Indonesia, the company said on Tuesday.
Chief executive officer Kirby Adams, in Thailand for the opening of a new steel plant, also dismissed concerns that China’s steel output, to meet increasing demand there, could cause a glut on the regional market.
BlueScope’s $A86 million metallic-coated flat steel plant at Map Ta Phut, south of Bangkok, will employ 340 people and raise capacity by 200,000 tonnes a year to 375,000 tonnes.
Adams said BlueScope forecasts Thailand’s building and construction sector will grow at more than five per cent a year.
