Asia’s biggest hospital to unveil P2.3M visitors’ waiting lounge
THE Philippine General Hospital (PGH), considered as Asia’s biggest public hospital complex, will inaugurate on Monday the newly constructed Mabuhay Lounge visitor’s welcome area.
The P2.3 million-Mabuhay Lounge is a major project of Bayan Muna party-list Representative Satur C. Ocampo as contracted by the Department of Public Works and Highways (PDWH) and through the efforts of University of the Philippines (UP)-PGH Director Carmelo A. Alfiler and the All-UP Workers’ Union-Manila Chapter.
Dr. Reynaldo Lesaca, chairman of Bayan Muna party-list, will represent Ocampo on Monday’s inauguration ceremonies starting at 9:15 a.m. UP Manila Chancellor Ramon L. Arcadio and UP President Emerlinda R. Roman will represent UP and UP-PGH.

Ramsay eyes Asia after lift
AUSTRALIA'S biggest private hospital operator, Ramsay Health Care, yesterday said it was putting feelers out for acquisitions in Asia, after unveiling an 80 per cent rise in interim net profits.
Managing director Pat Grier said that the company's strong cash flow and falling debt had allowed it to begin scouring for potential takeover targets in Asia, followed by Britain.

Asias biggest lake under threat
One of the biggest fresh water lakes in Asia, the Loktak lake in Manipur is on the brink of extinction.
State Government officials visited the lake, about 45 kms from Imphal at Bishenpur district, and said that the lake is getting shallower everyday and water plants (floating bio mass) have started appearing on the lake, making it look like a mass of land.
Meanwhile, the State Government has passed the Loktak Lake (Protection) Bill 2006, which will limit fishing activities of the people settled on the lake.

Asia Cryo-Cell plans 2 overseas banks
Asia Cryo-Cell Pvt Ltd, which provides cord blood stem cell banking service, has said it planned to set up two overseas banks for umbilical cord stem cells by June 2006.
It was considering Sri Lanka, Malaysia or Dubai as candidate locations.
The Chennai-based company, formed in November 2004, would soon set up a stem cell transplant facility in Chennai in collaboration with a teaching hospital there.

The World health Day was observed across the country on Friday and a number of events were organised in Islamabad.
This year’s theme was ‘working together for better health’, stressing greater cooperation among people and the authorities for promoting health. A number of events were organised to mark the day including seminars, discussion programmes and walks.

Manila welcomes Asias first big biodiesel plant
The Philippines yesterday inaugurated Asias first large-scale biodiesel plant, which can produce up to 60m litres a year of the alternative fuel from coconut oil, a big step for the poor south-east Asian country.
Chemrez Inc, a Manila-based oleochemicals maker, built the plant for 650m pesos ($12.6m, €10m, £6.9m) ahead of the passage later this year of legislation requiring petrol refiners and distributors to sell diesel fuel mix with at least 1 per cent coconut oil, and petrol containing at least 5 per cent of sugar ethanol.
