Asia-Pacific air travel off to solid start this year

Air travel in the Asia-Pacific region is off to a solid start this year, with passenger traffic growing 4.9 percent in the first two months despite high oil prices, an industry group said Friday.

The Kuala Lumpur-based Association of Asia Pacific Airlines said its 17 member airlines flew a total 21.246 million passengers in January and February, up from 20,262 million in the same period in 2004.

In January, passenger traffic surged 6.4 from a year ago to 11.08 million but growth eased in February to 4.9 percent on-year to 10.166 million.

For the two months, freight traffic expanded at an even faster rate of 5.3 percent, it said.

“The combined results for January and February indicate a solid start to the year, with 4.9 percent growth in the number of international passengers being carried by AAPA airlines,'’ association director-general Andrew Herdman said in a statement.

Mixed 2006 start in Asia

Mixed 2006 start in Asia Korean stocks gain 0.7%, but Taiwan index is 1.3% lower in year's 1st session; Japan markets closed. If the first day of trade in 2006 is a harbinger in Asia, expect a year of growing political tension, worsening inflation and volatile markets that continue on an upward march - but perhaps not the rocket- like path seen in the latter half of 2005. In the first day of trading in the new year, shares in Korea and Taiwan, the only two major regional markets open Monday, moved in opposite directions in an otherwise thinly-traded session. Japanese markets were closed
