U.S. appoints new intel analyst for S.Asia
U.S. intelligence agencies have a new head analyst on South Asia.
Amb. Nancy J. Powell, a former envoy to Pakistan, Uganda, and Ghana, was appointed to the National Intelligence Council as the first national intelligence officer for South Asia, according to a statement Tuesday from the office of the Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte.
The National Intelligence Council is the body within the U.S. government that coordinates the production of mid- and long-term strategic analysis. For instance, the council oversees the production of the so-called National Intelligence Estimates – a comprehensive statement of the views of U.S. intelligence agencies about a particular issue.
National intelligence officers are the director of national intelligence’s senior advisers in their specific area of regional or functional expertise, according to the statement, and the appointment will enable the council “to expand its coverage of this vitally important region that is central to the United States’ war on terrorism and its efforts to address such issues as, extremism, regional conflict and weapons of mass destruction proliferation.”
Powell will move to the National Intelligence Council from her current position at the State Department, where she is the senior coordinator for avian and pandemic flu issues.
