Najib: East Asia must prevent “power rivalries” from escalating

Malaysia urged Asian nations such as China and Japan to prevent their rivalries from brewing into conflicts that could hurt regional stability.

East Asia faces “a number of potential rivalries'’ that could fuel tensions, similar to how power struggles in Europe in the early 20th century led to the First World War, said Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak on Thursday.

“What is important is to look at the way to manage power rivalries so that they do not translate into hostility,'’ Najib told a forum of government officials and analysts discussing issues facing East Asia.

“The most obvious one is that between China and Japan, both having deep-rooted suspicions and historical experiences that continue to haunt both sides,'’ Najib said.

Asia: Nikkei 225 index hit by technical glitch The Nikkei closed higher on Monday, as the weaker yen against the dollar gave key exporters a boost. A technical glitch by the Nihon Keizai company, which prints the Japanese business daily, prevented the release of the Nikkei 225s closing figures following a power cut in Tokyo. Wall Street, Asia rally power ADRs Surging benchmarks from Wall Street to the Pacific Rim propelled Asian shares trading in New York Friday to lofty heights. The Bank of New York Asia American Depositary Receipt Index was last up 2.45 points, or 1.8%, to 138.96 and the overall Composite Index was 2.35 points, or 1.7%, higher at 142.09. Earlier, South Korea's Kospi index closed at a new all-time high, up 1.2% to 1,412.79. In Tokyo, the bellwether Nikkei 225 finished up 2.84 points at 16,428.21, its highest close since September 2000. See Asia Markets.
