BMW Asia lends a hand to young Asian artists

Five up-and-coming young artists from the Asian region will get to spend a creative fortnight in Singapore thanks to BMW Asia and Singapore Tyler Print Institute.

The inaugural BMW Young Asian Artists Series will see the five artists - selected by the STPI over the course of this and the next year - invited to visit Singapore for a two-week residency at the Institute. There, they will produce new works on paper with STPI’s printmakers.

These works will be editioned and exhibited, with brochures detailing each artist’s work compiled into a catalogue at the end of the two-year programme in December 2007. An exhibition featuring all the artists’ works will round off the programme. The first BMW Young Asian Artist is Malaysian-born Eric Chan, whose works explore the subtleties of light and shadow.

Expressing appreciation to BMW Asia for its support, director of the STPI, Ms Irene Lee said, “Our hope is that we will be able to help five young artists move their careers to the next level by providing a platform for their work.”

Asia Orchestra Week 2006

Asia Orchestra Week 2006 This October, Tokyo and Osaka will host Asia Orchestra Week 2006, an annual festival that celebrates classical music from a distinctly Asian -- and contemporary -- perspective. Over the last four years, AOW has drawn 30,000 people to watch more than 2,000 musicians from 13 Asia-Pacific countries. Programs presented by these orchestras, which this year include Sydney Orchestra and the Korean Symphony Orchestra, combine the traditional classical repertoire with innovative contemporary compositions that often reflect their own national folk music. Each concert is headed by a promising young soloist, who harmonizes this blend of conflict and contrast. One

Saudi Arabia’s Hamad named Asia’s top player KUALA LUMPUR: Saudi Arabia defender Hamad Al Montashari was named Asian Player of the Year yesterday and Japan were crowned Team of the Year at an awards ceremony overshadowed by controversy. The Al Ittihad star beat off the challenge of Uzbekistan’s Dynamo Kiev striker Maksim Shatskikh for a title diminished by the exclusion of most of Asia’s best players because they could not travel to Kuala Lumpur. An Asian Football Confederation (AFC) dictate that a player must attend the ceremony to be eligible for the award ruled out Manchester United star Park Ji-Sung and

The future of football is Asia

The future of football is Asia This is the first in a four-part series on the IFA Shield. Franz Beckenbauer is President of FC Bayern Munich. For me, it is a joyous occasion that a team of FC Bayern Munich is participating in the prestigious 111th IFA Shield tournament. Unfortunately, my job as head of the 2006 FIFA World Cup organising committee does not permit me to accompany our young team, and my good old friend and colleague Gerd Mueller, on this journey. I have committed myself to visit all 31 countries that have qualified for the 2006 World Cup, which will be
