Indian team gets ready for Asia Cup qualifier

The Indian football team was slugging it out in a practice match against the Air Force team, but its skipper, Baichung Bhutia was sweating it out by jogging on the adjacent athletic track.

“Straight running is not a problem,'’ says Bhutia to the doctor P. S. M. Chandran who queries about his recovery.

Bhutia suffered a cut on his thigh during East Bengal’s national league encounter against JCT recently and thus has been reduced to the sidelines so far during the national team’s preparation for the Asia Cup qualifier to be played against Japan in Japan on February 22.

While Bhutia was expected to be fit soon and get on with the game, some of the prominent players like Shanmugam Venkatesh, Alvito D’Cunha, Climax Lawrence and Samir Naik will be missed by the team when it faces the formidable opponent in its backyard.

“We have to fight with whatever team that we have managed to assemble,'’ said Nayeemuddin before getting the boys ready for the warm-up match under the floodlights in cool weather at the Nehru Stadium.
