Pak ultras threat to S Asia peace: USA

Pakistan-based militant groups operating in Kashmir pose a persistent threat to stability in South Asia, a top intelligence official of the USA has warned, even as he called India a “reliable ally” in the fight against global terrorism.

“Pakistani militant groups, primarily focussed on the Kashmiri conflict, a persistent threat to regional stability and US interests in South Asia and the Near East. They also pose a potential threat to our interests worldwide,” National Intelligence director Mr John Negroponte told US lawmakers yesterday.

In prepared remarks to the Senate Intelligence Committee examining a range of threats to the US, Mr Negroponte stressed that New Delhi would continue to be a “reliable ally” against global terrorism “in part because India has been a frequent target for Islamic terrorists, mainly in Kashmir”. He also said India was seeking to play a key role in fostering democracy in the region, particularly in Nepal and Bangladesh.

Even while referring to Paksitan as a frontline state in the war on terror, Mr Negroponte said Islamabad also remained “a major source of extremism” that posed a threat to Gen. Musharraf, the USA, India and Afghanistan.

Saving Central Asia from Uzbekistan

Saving Central Asia from Uzbekistan To the list of the world's most self-destructively repressive regimes we should add one name that is too often overlooked: Uzbekistan. Like North Korea or Zimbabwe, Uzbekistan suffers under a brutal authoritarian system that not only impoverishes and commits massive abuses against its own citizens, but also threatens to spread violent instability to its neighbors. The international community needs to develop new strategies to prepare for such a potential meltdown in Central Asia True, Uzbekistan represents no direct security threat to Europe or the United States, and the government in Tashkent is not at risk

Linking Europe and Northeast Asia

Linking Europe and Northeast Asia The Korean War did not end when the armistice was signed on July 27, 1953. Only the shooting stopped. The effects of that war still stand in the way of a stable peace in Northeast Asia. In Washington, on that same July day, those European countries that sent troops to the Korean War under the U.N. flag signed a joint declaration pledging that they would resist any new armed attack. That declaration is still legally valid and it serves as a reminder that any major military conflict or crisis in Korea would cause immediately serious consequences
