De Venecia heads first Asia-Pacific centrist party

TAKING what they said was a first step toward political and economic integration in Asia, parliamentary leaders from Europe and Asia yesterday signed a declaration establishing a regional Asia-Pacific unit of the Centrist Democratic International and elected Speaker Jose de Venecia its first president.

The accord binds all member parties to end conflicts in the region through interfaith dialogues, peace talks, creation of an Asian bond to end poverty and harnessing the role of political parties as instruments of development.

De Venecia said the Manila declaration was the “first step” toward a European Union-type of integration of Asian nations into a “continent without dividing lines.”

“I welcome you all as we take this first step together on our journey toward an Asian People’s Party, creating the beginnings of what could be the first regional transnational political party in Asia,” De Venecia said in his welcome address.

Canadians Face Tough Choices in Election

Canadians Face Tough Choices in Election Canadians voting Monday for a new leader and House of Commons will choose between 13 years of Liberal Party rule or a new government that could shift the country toward a conservative right seeking to cut social programs funded by high taxes. It's a tough call for the nation's 22.7 million registered voters. Many support the social and economic policies of the Liberals and worry that Conservative leader Stephen Harper may be too extreme in his views on abortion and gay marriage, but Canadians also have grown weary of the broken promises and corruption scandals
