Dravid helps India wrest control of 2nd Test

Indian skipper Rahul Dravid came within three runs of his second successive century in the series to frustrate Pakistan in the second Test at the Iqbal stadium on Monday.

Dravid was unbeaten on 97 during a stubborn second-wicket stand with Venkatsai Laxman (83 not out) as India reached 227-1 at lunch on the third day in reply to Pakistan’s first-innings total of 588.

The tourists now need 162 to avoid the follow-on with nine wickets in hand on a dead wicket that is proving a nightmare for bowlers.

Dravid and Laxman, who resumed on 110-1, blunted Pakistan’s pace and spin attack to put on 188 for the unbroken second wicket.

Asia-Pacific prepares pandemic test

Asia-Pacific prepares pandemic test Australia and Singapore will lead an international exercise in June to test communications preparedness for a possible bird flu pandemic, officials said on Thursday. The exercise, the first of its kind and involving major economies of the Asia-Pacific region, would test how countries would stay connected in a pandemic or other major disaster such as tsunamis and earthquakes. It will give them an opportunity to respond to a credible real-life scenario that allows them to test communications across the region, Australian official Helena Studdert said on the sidelines of a Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) bird flu

Drug Trafficking in South Asia Continues says UN

Drug Trafficking in South Asia Continues says UN Lapses in the control of pharmaceutical preparations containing narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances have led to widespread abuse among all segments of the population in South Asian countries including Bangladesh, says a UN report. "Drug trafficking and abuse problems in South Asia continue to be both serious and multifaceted," said the annual report of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) for 2006 that was released Wednesday. It said "In South Asian countries, particularly Bangladesh, India and Nepal, lapses in the control of pharmaceutical preparations containing narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances have led to widespread

Lack of aid weakening bird flu control in Asia

Lack of aid weakening bird flu control in Asia Weak disease-surveillance and inadequate aid are thwarting efforts to control bird flu in Asia, according to a senior official of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. The organisations assistant director-general, He Changchui, was speaking at a press conference following a meeting of health and agriculture ministers from 11 Asian nations in Delhi, India last week (27-28 July). He said international aid was a third of what was needed to combat the epidemic in the region. In a joint declaration, the meetings delegates pledged to strengthen systems for detecting and containing bird flu outbreaks in people

He took 20 wickets in the just concluded domestic Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and picked five wickets in two games so far in
