Asia Declines Despite Positive Tech Review

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)–American depository receipts fell slightly Friday, with the greatest loss in Asia despite some positive technology news for LCD flat-panel makers.

The Bank of New York index of ADRs fell 0.62 to 131.07. The Latin American index climbed 1.22 to 202.00, the Asian index fell 0.77 to 127.02, and the European index fell 0.70 to 130.82.

An industry review showed LCD flat-panel displays are in stronger demand than originally expected, and two companies that benefited from the positive news were AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), which closed up 6% at $14.19, and LG Philips LCD Co. (LPL), which climbed 2.5% to $20.47.

Other technology companies that closed higher Friday included Advanced Semiconductor Engineers Inc. (ASX), up 5.6% to $3.57; Advantest (ATE), up 4.5% to $22.04; and United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), 1.3% to $3.23.

2005 In Review: Central Asia Witnesses Revolution, Continued Crackdown

2005 In Review: Central Asia Witnesses Revolution, Continued Crackdown It was a tumultuous year in Central Asia. A largely bloodless revolution in Kyrgyzstan was followed by the bloody suppression of dissent in Uzbekistan. With the region’s leaders on edge at events in Kyrgyzstan, the year produced further restrictions on political and media freedoms in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Prague, 21 December 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Early in 2005, commentaries on Kyrgyzstan often focused on how far a country considered

Managers in the latest monthly survey by Dow Jones Newswires raised their average weighting slightly for equities in a global portfolio, leaving it at a slight overweight. They have a neutral view on cash and are slightly underweight on bonds, which they say suffer from unattractive yields. Won Declines on Resistance MARKET ROUNDUP: CURRENCIES BUSINESS ASIA By Bloomberg

Won Declines on Resistance MARKET ROUNDUP: CURRENCIES BUSINESS ASIA By Bloomberg The South Korean won declined Thursday, ending two days of gains, on speculation that the central bank would allow it to weaken in order to keep exports competitive as the yen trades near a two- month low. A cheaper yen against the won reduces the cost of Japanese goods sold abroad, to the detriment of Korean manufacturers, who compete for buyers of electronics and automobiles. Traders raised bets that the Bank of Korea would sell its currency after Vice Finance Minister Chin Dong Soo said Wednesday that the government would

Dell's Asia push could slow with exec departures SHANGHAI – Dell Inc.'s aggressive expansion in Asia has suffered a setback with the departure of the company's top regional executive to an upstart Chinese rival – its second high level departure in the past two months.
