Socceroos score a dream draw in Asia

THE Socceroos have been handed a dream draw for their competitive debut as an Asian nation after being grouped with Bahrain, Kuwait and Lebanon in the qualifying tournament for the 2007 Asian Cup at the draw in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The finals of the tournament take place in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam in July next year and the Socceroos should be warm favourites to make it that far.

The top two teams from each of the six qualifying groups, each made up of four countries, will join the four host nations in the 16-team finals. Australia’s FIFA ranking of 48 puts it ahead of Bahrain (52), Kuwait (72) and Lebanon (125).

As the draw stands, the Socceroos face their most difficult assignment first, when they travel to the Middle East on February 22 to take on a Bahrain side that narrowly failed to qualify for this year’s World Cup.

Socceroos help spread Aussie influence in Asia

Socceroos help spread Aussie influence in Asia CANBERRA: Buoyed by its World Cup qualification, Australia is looking at using soccer to push its foreign policy and win acceptance in Asia. A study this week suggested the game - rocketing in popularity in Asia and Australia - could open important new doors, develop links in trade and politics, turn public opinion Australia's way and even assist in the fight against HIV/Aids. The Lowy Institute think-tank based its report on a seminar last month drawing together specialists on soccer, foreign policy commentators and regional affairs. More:
