Malaysia’s Air Asia plans flight to Kolkata

SINGAPORE: Air Asia, the Malaysian low-cost carrier promoted by Tony Fernandes, may soon start flights to Kolkata, a place which shares an emotional chord with Goan-Portugese entrepreneur.

Speaking to TOI, Fernandes, Air Asia’s group CEO said, “The question is no longer if, it’s when. In fact I’m planning a trip early next year to India, during which I hope to firm up the details.”

Fares, as expected from Fernandes, who in three years has turned around a government-owned loss-making carrier with 3 planes into one of Asia’s most competitive low-cost airlines, will be very attractive. In fact a $50 fare for a Bangkok-Kolkata trip, may not be too off the mark.

Asia Needs More Bond Funds to Finance Development, Nor Says Asia needs to create more regional bond funds to tap its high savings and fund economic development, Malaysias Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop said. A bigger and deeper regional bond market and integration of the regions financial systems must be achieved before countries can consider forming a single Asian currency, he said. To have a bond fund mechanism which can be utilized to fruitfully and constructively develop this region, particularly for infrastructure, would be a very good idea, Nor said in an interview.
